The private detective

Mara had been hired to recover a valuable necklace that had disappeared from a private collection. She planned (visit) an antiques dealer who had tried to sell a similar necklace a few weeks earlier. The dealer denied (steal) anything and refused (answer) Mara’s questions about where he had been on the night of the theft. As she left the shop, Mara remembered (see) the same man in some security footage carrying a small leather case.

That evening, the dealer left his shop and headed towards the old market. (follow) someone through crowded streets without being noticed requires patience, but Mara managed (stay) far enough behind him. At the entrance to the market, he stopped (walk) and spoke to another man before continuing into an empty warehouse. Mara chose (keep) (watch) from across the street. A few minutes later, she saw the dealer take the missing necklace out of the leather case and hand it to a waiting buyer. Mara immediately called the police (report) what she had seen.
